About Cinestill
Cinestill began in 2012 when a group of filmmakers and lab technicians in the United States repurposed motion-picture film stock for still photography. Their initial offering used 35mm Kodak motion-picture film that had been specially processed and modified so it could be developed in standard still-photography labs. The company’s early distinguishing innovation was removing the remjet anti-halation backing from cinema film—necessary for motion-picture chemical processes but problematic for C-41 still processing—allowing filmmakers and photographers to use cinematic film stocks in everyday colour negative workflows.
Over the next several years Cinestill expanded its product range beyond the original 50D and 800T derivatives to include various ISO speeds and formats, plus black-and-white options and specialty emulsions. They introduced formats for both roll film and motion-picture-style cartridges, and developed unique film formulations that preserved the characteristic colour rendition and halation of motion-picture stocks while being compatible with consumer lab processing.
