More About Ilford Pan F+ 50, 35mm

Ilford Pan F Plus in 35mm is a classic slow-speed black-and-white film that rewards careful exposure and thoughtful shooting. With a nominal ISO of 50, Pan F Plus delivers exceptionally fine grain and superb sharpness, making it a favourite for landscapes, portraiture, and any situation where detail and tonality are paramount. The film’s high resolving power renders textures and subtle tonal transitions beautifully, producing prints and scans with a delicate, almost velvety quality.

The contrast of Pan F Plus is moderate to high depending on development and lighting, allowing photographers to achieve deep blacks and luminous highlights without losing midtone detail. It responds well to push and pull processing: pushing to ISO 100 or 200 can add effective contrast and film ‘bite’ for more dramatic scenes, while pulling to ISO 25 can yield extremely soft, low-contrast results ideal for dreamy, low-key work. Its latitude is forgiving with careful metering, and zone-system users will appreciate how reliably it holds detail across exposure variations.

In practical use, Pan F Plus benefits from precise focusing and steady camera technique because its fine grain makes any softness more apparent. It scans exceptionally well, producing high-quality digital files for archiving or printing. For darkroom workers, the film prints beautifully on fibre papers, with rich blacks and subtle midtones. Overall, Ilford Pan F Plus remains a go-to choice when ultimate detail, tonal subtlety and a classic black-and-white aesthetic are the goals.

About Ilford

Ilford Photo began in 1879 in Ilford, Essex, when Alfred Hugh Harman started making dry gelatine photographic plates. The business incorporated as Ilford Limited in 1891 and expanded into roll film and paper, becoming a major supplier for amateur and professional photography. After financial difficulties and ownership changes in the mid-20th century, the company’s photographic operations were nationalised in 1969 and later privatised. Ilford Imaging UK (trading as Ilford Photo) emerged from restructuring in the 1990s and 2000s, retaining a focus on black-and-white films, papers and chemistry. Today Ilford is known worldwide for traditional silver-based black-and-white products, manufactured and distributed from its UK base.

Action by name action by nature, the Fomapan Action 400 film excels in changeable lighting or when you need a quick shutter speed to capture a fast moving object. It not too grainy but is not as finer grain as some 400 speed films, and it starts to get more contrasty that the previous films in the Fomapan line up but it still delivers a classic film look on a budget.
