About Ilford
Ilford Photo began in 1879 in Ilford, Essex, when Alfred Hugh Harman started making dry gelatine photographic plates. The business incorporated as Ilford Limited in 1891 and expanded into roll film and paper, becoming a major supplier for amateur and professional photography. After financial difficulties and ownership changes in the mid-20th century, the company’s photographic operations were nationalised in 1969 and later privatised. Ilford Imaging UK (trading as Ilford Photo) emerged from restructuring in the 1990s and 2000s, retaining a focus on black-and-white films, papers and chemistry. Today Ilford is known worldwide for traditional silver-based black-and-white products, manufactured and distributed from its UK base.
