More About Ilford XP2 Super, 35mm
Ilford XP2 Super is a chromogenic black-and-white film that uses C-41 chemistry, making it processable in any standard colour negative lab. Introduced to give the tonal characteristics of classic black-and-white emulsions with the convenience of colour processing, XP2 produces fine, smooth grain and a wide exposure latitude. This makes it particularly forgiving for mixed lighting situations and for shooters who prefer to post-process digitally after scanning.
The film renders blacks and midtones with a clean, neutral character while maintaining gentle highlight roll-off. Its grain is very fine compared to conventional silver-based black-and-white films, giving images a softer, more filmic look at normal enlargements. Because it’s chromogenic, contrast tends to be slightly lower than high-contrast silver emulsions..
XP2’s exposure latitude is one of its strongest assets: it handles overexposure and underexposure well, typically allowing pushes and pulls of a stop or two without catastrophic loss of shadow detail or drastic shifts in contrast. The nominal ISO is 400, but many photographers confidently rate it from ISO 200 to 1600 depending on desired grain and contrast. Its stability and consistency make it a reliable choice for both amateurs and professionals who need predictable results across different shooting conditions.
Processing is straightforward since the film is developed in standard C-41 chemistry; this also means fast turnaround from commercial labs and easy cross-processing when travelling. Scanning XP2-negatives is straightforward, and the neutral orange mask common to C-41 negatives does not present unusual challenges in conversion to black-and-white. For darkroom workers, it's possible to print from XP2 on silver gelatin paper after proper exposure and filtration adjustments, though many prefer digital scanning for the cleanest tonal control.
Overall, Ilford XP2 is valued for its blend of classic monochrome aesthetics and modern convenience. It’s an excellent choice for documentary, travel and portrait photographers.

About Ilford
Ilford Photo began in 1879 in Ilford, Essex, when Alfred Hugh Harman started making dry gelatine photographic plates. The business incorporated as Ilford Limited in 1891 and expanded into roll film and paper, becoming a major supplier for amateur and professional photography. After financial difficulties and ownership changes in the mid-20th century, the company’s photographic operations were nationalised in 1969 and later privatised. Ilford Imaging UK (trading as Ilford Photo) emerged from restructuring in the 1990s and 2000s, retaining a focus on black-and-white films, papers and chemistry. Today Ilford is known worldwide for traditional silver-based black-and-white products, manufactured and distributed from its UK base.
