About Kentmere
Kentmere began as part of Ilford Photo’s operations in the mid-20th century, taking its name from the village of Kentmere in the English Lake District. Originally, "Kentmere" was used by Ilford as a brand for papers and photographic materials produced at its factories, offering reliable, economical products aimed at amateurs, students and enthusiasts.
In the 1980s and 1990s the Kentmere name became most associated with a range of budget black-and-white films and photographic papers positioned below Ilford’s premium lines. These products delivered consistent, usable results at a lower price point, making darkroom work more accessible to hobbyists and educational institutions.
In recent years Kentmere has been maintained as a value-focused alternative within the analogue market, offering a straightforward selection of black-and-white films and papers that echo the brand’s longstanding reputation for practicality and economy. The name remains recognisable to photographers who seek dependable, no-frills materials for learning, testing and everyday shooting.
